Passengers on a flight to San Francisco were stunned when a 17-year-old boy opened an exit door on the plane and jumped onto the wing just minutes after it landed.

The teenager was aboard COPA Flight 208 from Panama City, which touched down at San Francisco International Airport at about 2:30 p.m. local time Tuesday, an airport official said.

But passenger Isaac Rodrigues said there was no door to close and a flight attendant blocked the gap with her body and the plane then continued on to the gate.

He took off down the tarmac, where a construction crew stopped him, said airport spokesman Doug Yakel. The plane went to the assigned gate and all the passengers were de-boarded safely. Yakel said no runways were affected and there was no operational impact after the incident.

The passenger, a U.S. citizen, was not injured and was taken into police custody.

The airline said it was cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

"And then this guy, I see him jump on the wing and then he starts climbing down the wing and then he just runs".

The teenager, who has not been named, then slid down the wing onto the tarmac after it landed on Tuesday. The crew detained him until the police arrived. A man from Arthertor named Matt Crowder, who was also traveling on the same flight, said that the people who were sitting near the exit stood up in shock and started shouting as soon as the boy jumped off.
