Perseid Meteor Shower happening this weekend

Whether you're on NASA's payroll or a total layman, the Perseid meteor shower is not to be missed. Though Perseid meteors do not pose any threat to Earth, outbursts could pose threats to spacecrafts in the area.

The Perseids are caused when Earth passes through a stream of icy, rocky debris left behind by a comet known as 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Whilst it officially started on 17 July, running through until 27 August, the Met Office has confirmed that the peak dates to see the shower are 12-13 August, with up to 100 meteors visible per hour.

A Perseid meteor crosses the sky over the medieval Saint Kazimir Catholic church at night in the village of Vselyub, Belarus, Aug. 13, 2016.

The Perseid meteor shower is usually one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year, but that won't be the case this time around, astronomy experts say.

Comet Swift-Tuttle has been well documented each time it has come close to Earth. Rising at around 11 p.m. on Friday night, and around midnight on Saturday night, the Moon will present a source of light pollution in the sky, that will washed out numerous fainter meteors.

A fireball is a very bright meteor, at least as bright as the planets Jupiter or Venus.

Partial lunar eclipse to be witnessed in Pakistan today
The total phase would end at 01:02 PST (on August, 21st) whereas the Penumbral Eclipse would end on 02:04PST (on August 21st). The outer or penumbral shadow is a zone where the Earth blocks part but not all of the Sun's rays from reaching the Moon .

The particles - which can be as small as a grain of sand - meet a fiery end after roughly a thousand years, as part of the comet's dust cloud.

Meteors - colloquially referred to as shooting stars - will be recognised by the untrained eye as thin streaks of light that dart fleetingly across the sky; blink, and you miss them.

Even so, it's best not to focus just to the north, because the meteoroids from the debris stream can hit the atmosphere at any point in the sky overhead.

Ali Amur al Shaibani, an Omani astronomer and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, said enthusiasts must go at a spot with clear sky view without any urban light pollution, and look towards the northeast.

Make sure the place you to opt to view the display is as dark as possible.
