Sammy Watkins, Jordan Matthews trades shake up WR rankings

Traded to Rams

Traded to Rams

The team dealt veteran receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round draft pick in 2018 for Bills cornerback Ronald Darby on Friday afternoon.

The trades were announced minutes apart on Twitter.

The trade gives Buffalo two first and second round draft picks in 2018, ammunition for a front office that has been non-committal on starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Matthews has been one of the most consistent and productive receivers in the league since being drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft. Join the Inside the Iggles team!

There were reports the Eagles would be open to trading Jordan Matthews as far back as February, so it certainly comes as no surprise the club finally pulled the trigger. In his three years in Philadelphia, he had 225 catches for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns. It never gets any easier in this business because however good he is as a player, he's a better person. Matthews has struggled to get right since sustaining what was described as a bone bruise last August on a low hit during training camp. He is now dealing with knee tendinitis, which kept him from practicing for a good portion of the spring. Meanwhile, Matthews played 93 percent of his snaps out of the slot in 2014-2015, and then 67 percent in 2016.

Friday's Mega Millions jackpot raised from $382M to $393M
Our (apparently optimistic) friends over at KCTV5 did the math and found out your chances of winning BOTH lotteries. Tickets will also be on sale for Friday's Mega Millions jackpot, which now stands at an estimated $393 million.

The emergence of young wideouts Marcus Johnson and Mack Hollins, along with Agholor's strong offseason, made Matthews expendable.

But Matthews' departure will still leave a void.

Just as importantly, the trade brings some much-needed talent to a suspect cornerback group. (Brooks, coming off a ruptured quad tendon, injured his hamstring Thursday in the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers). But playing devil's advocate, let's say they throw the ball 520 times and he gets a 20 percent target share, we're looking at 104 targets.

"I think when the media starts putting it out, and we do the same thing, when media starts putting out they think guys are available, whether that's true or not, that starts getting you phone calls and that's how it started here".
