Russia accuses US of 'full-scale trade war' after Trump imposes new sanctions

Trump's legal team responded to Thursday's reports exactly in the way that might be expected of a conventional White House, with a sense of professionalism that has often been lacking from the administration.

"I just hope the final determination is a truly honest one, which is what the millions of people who gave us our big win in November deserve and what all Americans who want a better future want and deserve", Trump told thousands of cheering, sign-waving supporters packed into an arena in Huntington. Cooler heads may counsel the White House to put off that confrontation until later.

President George W. Bush regularly issued signing statements when he thought Congress was encroaching on executive power. If lawmakers back a "joint resolution of disapproval", the president would be barred from changing the sanctions. "We won because of you".

Asked for comment on the story presidential lawyer Ty Cobb said the White House would not discuss "specific communications" with Mueller but would "continue to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel".

But Trump has never been a politician whose fundamental appeal is logical. He called it a "total fabrication".

Under the regulations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is the government official empowered to fire Mueller under limited circumstances, such as conflict of interest and dereliction of duty. But, this is Trump. This, in fact, is what men like Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are already doing - and with gusto.

Trump asserts support for McMaster
Apparently, new White House chief of staff John Kelly is unable to stop the war, or is siding with McMaster against Bannon. The White House issued a statement Friday in which Trump says, "General McMaster and I are working very well together".

But none of this really tells us a great deal about how Trump thinks the world should be organized - assuming that he thinks about that subject at all.

"We know that the nature of these investigations become fishing expeditions where you're just throwing Jello up against the wall and hoping something will stick", said White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway on "Fox and Friends". Some advocates and members of Congress had feared the task force's recommendations would give Sessions the green light to begin dismantling what has become a sophisticated, multimillion-dollar pot industry that helps fund schools, educational programs and law enforcement. "My views haven't changed", he said.

Jim Justice says he's switching parties to join the Republicans as President Donald Trump visited the increasingly conservative state.

Don't misunderstand me. In questioning congressional review of sanctions, I'm not excusing Trump's behavior.

Mueller is investigating whether there was any collusion between Moscow's spies and the Trump campaign - allegations that, if proven true, could represent an abrogation of American democracy. It was not immediately clear how or whether the Washington grand jury was connected to the work of a separate one in Alexandria, Virginia. Trump demanded in a tweet posted early Friday, a day after he leveled a host of broadsides against Democrats and investigators at a rally in Huntington, West Virginia.

Through any conventional lens, this is a terrible strategy that leaves Trump open to political and legal peril.
