Lopez was released from prison last month and placed under house arrest after serving three years of a 13-year sentence on charges of inciting violence at opposition rallies. He had already been in home detention since 2015.

He was later granted house arrest following a ruling by Venezuela's Supreme Court months ago which said Lopez was granted the "humanitarian measure" for health reasons.

In the latest twist in the slow-motion crisis, Venezuela's chief prosecutor was sacked on Saturday and ordered to stand trial, less than 24 hours after a newly elected legislative superbody was installed with sweeping powers to strengthen President Nicolas Maduro's grip on power.

Addressing this issue, Rodriguez said if the opposition "does not follow a democratic path, justice will be imposed, the ANC is also here to see justice done".

Venezuela's armed forces issued a statement calling the rebellion an ill-fated "propaganda show" aimed at destabilizing the country and reaffirmed their allegiance to Maduro.

In its first act on Saturday, August 5, the body, the Constituent Assembly, ordered the dismissal of the country's attorney general, Luisa Ortega, who became a vociferous critic after breaking ranks with Maduro.

The beginning of the Assembly's works, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, was postponed by Maduro's decision after a controversy over an alleged electoral "fraud" identified by the Prosecutor's Office and by the company responsible for counting Sunday's votes.

In 2006, the United States prohibited the sale or transfer of military arms or technology to Venezuela, whose then-president, Hugo Chavez, had closely allied the country with Russian Federation and China.

The secretary of the Organization of american States (OAS), Luis Almagro, has lent its support to the Mercosur.

Venezuela was previously suspended in December for failing to uphold commitments it made when it joined the group in 2012.
