Sanchez, who was Arsenal's top scorer in the league with 24 goals last season, has been linked with a move to Paris St Germain in the French media, but Wenger has been adamant that he would stay at the Emirates Stadium.

On Wednesday (9 August), the Telegraph reported PSG had dropped their interest in the 28-year-old, handing Arsene Wenger a major boost.

And Merson reckons that although Arsenal's public stance is Sanchez is not for sale, the club would actually let him go to France to avoid a repeat of losing a key player to a direct rival like Robin van Persie's move to Manchester United in 2012.

However, his absence from the Community Shield, coupled with Wenger's revelation that he will miss the game against Leicester, and possibly Stoke, has further fuelled rumours over his future. "He had a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training". It was one of the days of recent weeks for me because I know how important he is, not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, but as well in the group.

Wenger added: "For us, Alexis Sanchez is a loss, of course". But we have all the other players prepared in pre-season and they are all ready.

Wenger says that Sanchez will not feature in Arsenal's opening game of the season, against Leicester City on Friday night, and may miss the clash with Stoke City the following weekend.

After nearly 12 months of speculation surrounding Sanchez's future the end-game doesn't appear to be in sight.

Asked if he expected Al-Khelaifi to get in touch, Wenger replied: "No, no".

The Frenchman, 67, eventually signed a new two-year contract extension in May following an end to a campaign which finished on a high with victory in the FA Cup final after failing to secure Champions League qualification for the first time under his nearly 21-year reign.
