American President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that the United States would have to annihilate North Korea if Washington is forced to defend itself or its allies from Pyongyang's nuclear threats.

Trump also said the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, is on a path to destruction.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to North Korea Tuesday, saying if pressed, he may have no choice but to "totally destroy" the belligerent regime.

The carefully crafted Trump warning suggested though that North Korea risked extermination only if it first attacked the USA or its allies, and Washington prefers to give a chance for Pyongyang to denuclearize.

And a phone call with China's president: "We discussed trade and a place called North Korea", said the president.

What time is the speech: Trump will address the General Assembly around 10:30 a.m. ET.

Trump, however, stopped short of calling for regime change, which North Korea regards as the ultimate American intention and treats as a reason for its development of nuclear weapons.

"It's safe to say, in the entire history of the United Nations, there has never been a more straightforward criticism of the unacceptable behavior of other member states", Bolton said. "I really think we have a chance", said the president. "In America, we do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to watch", Trump said, adding, "As President of the United States, I will always put America first. All responsible leaders have an obligation to serve their own nations".

Most of the several hundred thousand Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh before this latest wave still aren't registered. Ms Suu Kyi did not mention the Rohingya by name in yesterday's speech, but did address their potential return.

But, the United States leader added, the greatest threat to the Tehran regime was not the American military, but the Iranian people who want change.

But the president stood before world leaders and a global audience and declared that U.N. members, acting as a collection of self-interested nations, should unite to confront global dangers.

At home in the United States however, Trump was pilloried by among others veteran Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein. As he lambasted North Korea, the nation's two front seats for delegation leaders were empty. Trump also set two new markers for U.S. policies vis-a-vis rest of the world: Washington would no insist other countries adopt USA values; and it is comfortable dealing with other "responsible leaders" putting their countries first, as he will do with the United States.

The administration must decide in mid-October whether it will certify that Iran is still in compliance with the agreement. He also decried the "disastrous rule" of Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro and urged the U.N.to step in.

"This is the time for statesmanship", said the former prime minister of Portugal.

"In over 30 years in my experience with the United Nations, I never heard a bolder or more courageous speech", said Netanyahu.

Who won't be there: Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the General Assembly, nor will China's President Xi Jinping. He pledged the United States would be "partners in your work" to make the organization a more effective force for world peace. The administration has also shied away from talk of nation-building or creating democracies through the use of the USA military.

"No nation on earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles", Trump said.
