According to the student body of BHU, what started off as a protest against eve-teasing was catapulted to a different level by certain students affiliated to various political parties. "Both university authorities and the Uttar Pradesh police have showed a shameful abdication of their duty to respect and protect the rights of students at BHU".

He also took on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice-Chancellor G.C. Tripathi, stating that it was shameful on his part to have suggested that girl students not step outside the hostel after 6 p.m.

The dissenters were protesting an alleged sexual harassment, media reports said. They later gave a memorandum to the District Magistrate demanding action against the guilty. However, the demonstrations soon turned violent as police resorted to a lathicharge, even manhandling protesting students and media persons covering the event.

One student, Akanskha Gupta, said campus officials did not take their complaints of harassment seriously. A BHU spokesperson had said that some students wanted to "forcibly" enter the V-C's residence but they were stopped by the BHU security guards. Angered over the laid-back attitude of the administration and lack of action from the side, the students staged protests outside the campus on Friday and blocked entry to the campus through the main gate. They were also incensed that the when the girl who was molested did ask a guard posted just 100 m away for help but received no response.

Days after linking with terrorsim the Rohingya Muslims, who are facing genocide in Myanmar at the hands of Buddhist regime, the Bahrtiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday eqauted the protesting students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) with the Naxalities.

It cites BHU students' allegations of gender discrimination at the hostels, such as "curfew timings" in the girls' hostels, where only vegetarian food is served while the boys' hostels serve non-vegetarian meals. The warden when told about the issue, instead of taking the issue seriously, questioned the reason for coming late to the hostel. It is highly objectionable that the Vice Chancellor has not met the students in spite of repeated requests by them. Meanwhile, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Raj Babbar also rushed to empathise with the protesting students.

Police cracked down on around 500 protesters of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) with batons and water cannons as they raised many issues pertaining to their demands in the North Campus.
