Pro-independence campaigners have defied Spanish authorities by handing out millions of ballots ahead of Sunday's vote.

Rajoy, speaking on Tuesday alongside U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, said it would be "ridiculous" if the affluent northeastern region declared independence from Spain. "All the referendum's logistics have been dismantled", the Spanish government's representative in Catalonia, Enric Millo, told reporters on Tuesday.

Trump said he's been watching the situation unfold in the region of Catalonia, whose leaders have vowed to hold a referendum Sunday on independence from Spain.

President Trump's decision to chime in reflects the largely anti-secessionist views across the West right now, with many nations fearing they'd face similar votes if Catalonia succeeded.

Police have already arrested several regional officials and state prosecutors are threatening to charge "collaborators" in the referendum.

The independence movement is widespread enough that it is unlikely to dissipate if the regional government fails to convert a "yes" vote into a split from Spain.

The Mossos have been instructed to take the keys to the schools and seal them off, as well as seize any material that could be used in the referendum and ensure that nobody is allowed to vote in a 100 meter radius of the building.

Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive
Last month, Saudi police arrested an Arab woman after video circulated showing her driving a auto in the Eastern Province. Critics worldwide say the ban is a sign of the Saudi government's oppression against women.

The remarks of the two USA spokeswomen come as Spanish courts have declared the referendum mandating secession illegal.

"Stop this escalation of radicalism and disobedience once and for all", Mariano Rajoy said in a televised statement as protesters remained in the centre of the Mediterranean seaside city after a day-long demonstration that headed into the night.

Students place leaflets on a wall during a protest march held to support the independence referendum in Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain, 24 September 2017.

Many had not yet received information about where or when they would be working after the state-run postal service was told to stop all mail related to the vote, Marta Rovira said in a radio interview.

The Catalan government says it will unilaterally declare independence within 48 hours of a "yes" vote.

Trump also offered prayers and support to those affected by deadly attacks last month that killed 16 people in Barcelona and a nearby town.
