According to Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez, 115 patients were evacuated from the facility, some in critical condition.

Police said they got a call about patients in distress at the Hollywood Hills site at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

The causes of their death were not immediately clear, but the facility, Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, completed a precautionary evacuation of all its patients.

Hollywood police conducted welfare checks on 42 other nursing homes and similar critical care facilities across the city throughout the day, said Raelin Storey, a spokeswoman for the city government. Dozens of the state's senior centers still lacked electricity in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, and several facilities were forced to evacuate.

The utility said in a statement Wednesday that it was limited in what it could reveal because of the investigations.

He said the building has been sealed off for the criminal investigation but did not give further details.

Hurricane Irma's devastation continues to affect Floridians, now leaving six people dead at a nursing home. Though staff tried to gather as many residents as possible near cooling fans, it might not have been enough to keep patients at a safe temperature.

"Facility administration has been in communication with Florida Power & Light and the Governor's office since the beginning of Hurricane Irma, and is cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome", Carballo wrote. Another resident died later in hospital, officials said.

The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Hollywood, Florida, was evacuated on Wednesday.

Count mayor Barbara Sharief has criticized the facility for being slow to react when its residents' health was in peril.

Dr Randy Katz, medical director of the emergency department at Memorial Regional Hospital, said the hospital began receiving patients early on Wednesday.

A kitchen worker at the center told the Miami Herald that the facility "had power from a generator to cook meals, but no air conditioning". The association added that it is working with state officials to identify homes without power so that utility companies could prioritize those in greatest need.

The nursing home said it was prepared for the hurricane, which slammed into Florida early Sunday morning.

The federal government's Medicare.gov website rates and provides basic information about nursing homes across the country.
