The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) has also responded, partnering with CADENA, its Mexican Jewish humanitarian partner, to support the search, rescue, and provide emergency aid in hard-hit Mexico City.

And the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City spewed a cloud of vapor with some ash about a mile (2 km) into the air last Saturday, but experts said it was not related to the quakes.

Rescue workers have now wrapped up their efforts at all but five sites in Mexico City, and the chances of pulling more survivors from the rubble are dim.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera reported that 7,649 properties have been examined and 87 percent of those are safe and require only minor repairs.

Rescuers work Monday in a Mexico City building toppled by last week's quake. For the past two days, the balance has only changed compared to the capital, where there are still some landslides and work is still being done to rescue potential survivors.

Buildings swayed in Mexico City, where nerves are still raw from Tuesday's 7.1-magnitude temblor that has killed at least 307 across the region.

In some places, the dogs had to crawl, getting much deeper into the rubble than rescuers could.' Frida, along with the other rescue dogs were brought to Mexico City with hopes to detect more signs of human life among the ruins.

Japan's Abe announces snap election amid worries over North Korea
It has set a comparatively low bar of securing a simple majority of at least 233 of the 465 seats at stake. Koike announced on Monday that she would lead candidates across the country under the "Party of Hope".

Now hopes were focused exclusively on concrete slabs at two sites: the former office block in the Roma Norte neighborhood, where around 40 people were believed to be missing, and an apartment building on the south side where searchers were looking for five people. They must sift through fragile piles of rubble that can pose a danger of collapsing anew. Search teams were still digging through unsafe piles of rubble Monday, hoping against the odds to find survivors after the September 19 quake.

"You don't save lives with your heart, you save them with organisation", said rescue worker Juan Carlos Gutierrez, his voice rising nearly to a shout.

As of Sunday afternoon, the death toll stands at 319 including 181 in Mexico City.

Thousands of professionals and volunteers work frantically at dozens of wrecked buildings across Mexico City looking for survivors of the powerful quake that hit Tuesday.

Mexican political parties say they want to give up some of their government funding for a year to help recovery from the magnitude 7.1 quake that hit on September 19, killing at least 333 people.

No new damage was immediately reported but rescue efforts were suspended to allow authorities to see if the new tremors would put workers at risk, said Luis Felipe Puente, the head of Mexico's civil protection agency.

The other deaths occurred in the states of Morelos, Puebla, Mexico, Guerrero and Oaxaca.
