How Trump Can Get Tough on Iran

Iran to IAEA: No, You May Not Visit Our Military Sites

The administration's next move in its monthslong review of its Iran policy was expected later Thursday, when President Donald Trump faced a deadline to decide on extending waivers that allow Iran to conduct much of its global commerce.

Netanyahu will be in NY to speak to the United Nations General Assembly in an address that will feature his arguments to amend the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

In a speech last week, USA ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley laid out how and why the administration might decertify the agreement, citing Iran's other malign activities, such as support for terrorism. Bloomberg news outlet has reported that Trump is determined to take advantage of the UN General Assembly to lobby and negotiate with European officials to finalize the idea of renegotiating the nuclear deal. The official acknowledged that there may be ways to police the Iran deal more rigorously and said the accord is helpful because it averts a nuclear-armed Iran, while allowing the global community to focus on other issues.

"We have to consider the totality of Iran's activities and not let our view be defined exclusively by the nuclear agreement", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told journalists at a media appearance with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in London today.

Opponents of the Iran nuclear deal are pushing a proposal that calls for President Donald Trump to declare Tehran has failed to comply with the agreement and to threaten a unprecedented economic embargo created to rattle the regime. He then told the Wall Street Journal that he "would be surprised if they were in compliance [by the next deadline]". They argue that at the very least Iran is violating the spirit of the agreement with its ballistic missile tests.

If America is seen as purposely sabotaging the agreement, Kahl said it would provide "lots of ammunition for Iranian hardliners to bludgeon Rouhani, discredit reformists and pragmatists within the Iranian system".

Tillerson's comments are particularly noteworthy given his past support of certifying Iranian compliance. The three-month recertification deadlines determine the status of sanction relief under the agreement.

"Nobody is allowed to visit Iran's military sites", Ali Akbar Velayati told reporters in Iran recently, calling the push for such inspections a threat to its national security.

The inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would by no means have access to Iran's classified information, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday.

If the president decides by the October 14 deadline to decertify the Iran deal, it would kick off a 60-day period in which Congress must decide whether to reinstate sanctions on Iran by a simple majority vote. The U.S. Mission to the United Nations responded in a statement that "of course, she and her team discussed the content with the White House" and through the "interagency" process.

Standing beside Tillerson, Britain's Johnson compared the tensions over North Korea's nuclear advance with the relative certitude that the Iran deal has provided. If the deal fell apart, "Iran would be back on the march to getting the potential for getting a nuclear weapon, and the IAEA would lose all visibility into the program", Sherman said.
