Hurricane Irma leaves its mark on Florida with incredible winds

Tides and storm surge flooding still remain high, and Irma will have a flood and severe weather threat for the rest of the day.

- Miami streets turned into raging rivers, and the city's airport is closed because of significant water damage.

Now the entire Georgia coast is under a storm surge warning as Irma continues its destructive march north.

Florida's governor warned this week that Irma is on track to be "bigger, faster and stronger" than Hurricane Andrew, the devastating Category 5 storm that caused major damage in the state in 1992.

Farther south, the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Association (FKECA) reported yesterday that 27,000 of its 32,000 accounts were without power, with power completely out from Snake Creek through Key West. Georgia Power says at least 1.2 million people in the state are without power.

Heavy rains are predicted for northern Florida and southern Georgia, which could see an additional seven to 15cm with total amounts reaching between 20 to 38cm. It was moving toward the northwest at 15 miles per hour, and a turn toward the northwest was expected by Tuesday morning, the Hurricane Center reported. Those involved in relief efforts in the Keys expect to find casualties, but Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers said she expected a low count because "so many people evacuated". A turn toward the northeast is expected Monday night, followed by a more easterly motion on Tuesday.

The hurricane was responsible for at least 26 deaths, including 10 in Cuba, as it passed through Caribbean island nations.
