In sometime storm's most violent winds had passed northeast of Sarasota.

Irma was expected to reach the heavily populated Tampa-St. Petersburg area early today.

Irma wreaked havoc over almost the entire Florida peninsula from the southernmost Keys to the Georgia line, from the Atlantic to the Gulf coasts. Tybee Island and the historic city of Savannah were particularly hard hit by rains and a storm surge.

He said teams were assessing the storm's impact on the bridges that link the keys, which may not be safe to cross.

In the low-lying Keys, appliances and furniture were seen floating away, and Monroe County spokeswoman Cammy Clark said the ocean waters were filled with navigation hazards, including sunken boats.

Video footage from Miami shows a frightening scene, with howling winds tearing through the city's streets and whipping the rising flood waters into a frothy river.

There has been some flooding in the centre of Naples but it is believed to be fresh water.

In Hialeah, Irma knocked out power at the regional sewage pump station.

The first aerial images have come in of the extensive damage left by Hurricane Irma in the Florida Keys, where county administrators said an "astounding recovery effort" that will soon involve an aircraft carrier is beginning Monday.

"We will know more in the hours ahead since the hurricane is active in Florida right now", spokesman Roger Frizzell said.

Eric Silagy, the CEO of Florida Power & Light, said Irma caused the most widespread damage in the company's history. Except for Pensacola, all of Florida's ports remain closed; Port Everglades and Port Tampa Bay have fuel tankers awaiting unloading, Gov.

They also expect Irma to weaken further into a tropical storm over far northern Florida or southern Georgia on Monday as it speeds up its forward motion.

It should be money well spent. "I can assure you that I will do my part and I will do my best to give you all a lovely fight". Forget the procession that was Mayweather vs McGregor - this could be the most thrilling middleweight contest in decades.

The storm's severity has affected the entire state of Florida.

Miami, meanwhile, was lashed with winds approaching 100 miles per hour, causing two crane collapses in the city. No injuries have been reported. City officials said it would have taken about two weeks to move the massive equipment.

Leaving a trail of devastation in Florida, Irma trudged north on Monday, flooding downtown Charleston, South Carolina, uprooting trees in Atlanta and cutting off coastal communities. Miami Beach barred outsiders from the island.

Anxious relatives, generous volunteers and frantic neighbors turned to social media after Hurricane Irma wiped out electricity and cell service to many communities around Florida, cutting off most contact with remote islands in the Keys.

Almost 4.5 million homes and businesses across Florida lost power, and utility officials said it will take weeks to restore electricity to everyone. Nonetheless areas of Tennessee, Alabama and western MS are expected to receive heavy rain as the tropical storm passes through.

Almost seven million people in the south-east were warned to get out of harm's way, including 6.4 million in Florida alone.

President Donald Trump approved a disaster declaration for Florida, opening the way for federal aid.

The U.S. Defense Department said it may need to help evacuate about 10,000 people stranded in the Florida Keys by Irma.

After ravaging the Keys, Irma made landfall again Sunday afternoon on Marco Island, south of Naples, as a category 3 storm.

The storm brought memories of Hurricane Charley, which blew ashore near Fort Myers in 2004 with winds near 149 miles per hour.

It's a sobering thought: Whether you live on the Treasure Coast or in Tallahassee, Pensacola, Melbourne or other parts of the Sunshine State, this could have been you.
