Irma is now over Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

Power losses in Georgia, which were at about 152,000 as of 8:45 a.m. EDT, were expected to increase as the storm moved north. Irma is moving to the northwest at 18 miles per hour with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

According to some reports, almost 4 million to 5 million homes and businesses in Florida lost power, and utility officials said it could take weeks to restore electricity to everyone.

Thousands of evacuees from Florida swarmed into Atlanta for shelter as they fled Irma earlier in the week.

It flooded streets, snapped construction cranes and left 58 percent of all Florida electricity customers without power - about 5.8 million accounts - according to Florida's State Emergency Response Team. The Florida cities of Jacksonville and Orlando were especially hard-hit by floodwaters.

Irma is expected to weaken further before becoming a tropical storm between northern Florida and southern Georgia on later Monday, the center said.

Lee County said state and local Department of Transportation inspectors would check out the causeways to the coastal islands early Monday - and warned that "due to Hurricane Irma's significant wave action, the Sanibel Causeway may have been impacted". "But we may see home heavy rain and tornadoes as well".

Warnings of hazardous storm surges remained in effect through vast swaths of peninsular Florida, where more than six million people had been ordered to flee Irma's path - one of the biggest evacuations in United States history.

Before hammering the U.S., Irma wreaked havoc in the Caribbean, leaving dozens of people dead and causing major damage to several islands.

What's happening in the Florida Keys?

Florida Governor Rick Scott told CNN, "My heart goes out to the people in the Keys", and he's not sure at this time how evacuations will commence. "Is it because they are just girls ... to me this is stupid, they are our Olympic team".

"It is unsafe to be walking out there", according to a Tampa city official. The National Guard also has arrived in the island chain amid official fears that a humanitarian crisis may be developing in the stricken region. He said Irma was risky and life-threatening. More than 4,200 USA flights scheduled for Monday were cancelled.

Irma's 11.25 days as a hurricane were the most since Nicole in 2016 and tied for the 23rd most in the satellite era.
