Little evidence that light drinking harms baby

Light drinking in pregnancy 'unlikely' to harm babies, but experts caution lack of evidence

Researchers found very little evidence that light drinking in pregnancy causes harm to babies, including birth defects, developmental delay, behavioural problems and impaired intelligence.

Up until previous year, pregnant women were advised they could safely drink up to one or two units, once or twice a week.

A team from Bristol University reviewed all the studies that have been conducted on the topic beginning in the 1950s, and discovered that there is no convincing proof that having one or two drinks a week poses a risk, the BBC reports.

The researchers even found that children born to mothers who drank light amounts of alcohol during pregnancy had better outcomes than those born to mothers who completely abstained.

The scientific literature lacks data on low-level alcohol consumption during pregnancy, but the new paper did a pretty thorough job of trying to examine any possible sources of information, said Dr. Robyn Horsager-Boehrer, professor and chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern's William P. Clements Jr. The analysis, which tracked the health of these children from birth to age 10, concluded that light to moderate drinking during pregnancy had "no effect" on any children involved in the research.

Bernadette White at Mercy Health from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists says she always advises against light drinking during pregnancy but when it comes to an occasional drink on a special occasion, common sense must prevail.

As for other research that suggests low amounts of alcohol have zero effect on pregnancy, Grunebaum says these assertions may be an attempt to make drinking certain amounts socially acceptable in some countries.

Moms-to-be know that heavy drinking during pregnancy can cause physical, mental, behavioral, and learning disabilities in babies.

"However, describing the paucity of current research and explaining that 'absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, ' appears warranted".

Pregnant women who drink up to two standard glasses of wine a week are unlikely to harm their unborn baby, a new study suggested.

Researchers found that drinking even small amounts during pregnancy may be linked with higher chances of having a small baby and delivering prematurely. "Formulating guidance on the basis of the current evidence is challenging", she said, according to the New York Post.

Andrew Shennan, professor of obstetrics at King's College London, said: "It has been hard to associate low levels of alcohol intake in pregnancy and harm, and this work confirms this".

At the same time it indicated that consumption should be restricted to within "one to two United Kingdom units, once or twice a week". "However, the findings should also caution us not to create a situation where mothers-to-be are made more anxious, or subject to unnecessary moral judgement, on the issue of very light alcohol consumption".
