Noon update on power outages local forecast

More than 6.7 million Florida homes and businesses are now without power after Hurricane Irma moved through the state, according to the state's emergency management division.

Electricity company Florida Power & Light said on Monday it was doing final checks before bringing back nuclear reactors that were powered down as Hurricane Irma hit Florida.

Hydro One says crews are expected to start crossing the border into the U.S.at about 6 p.m. Monday, and should reach the affected areas by Wednesday afternoon.

Still, he said, it will take days for many people to be restored and, in some cases where the damage was extensive, weeks.

Most remaining outages were in Florida Power & Light's service area in the southern and eastern parts of the state.

FPL, the state's largest utility, said its outages dipped to around 2.5 million customers by Tuesday evening from a peak of more than 3.6 million on Monday morning, but that was still more than half of its customers. Emera's Tampa Electric utility said the storm could affect up to 500,000 of the 730,000 homes and businesses it serves.

The movie's success over the weekend was spectacular considering the project cost only $35 million to produce. The movie adapts only part of the 1,000-plus page book, in which its main characters are children.

FPL said it expects to restore essentially all of its customers in the eastern portion of the state by the weekend and the harder-hit western portion Florida by September 22.

Florida outages for Duke, the state's second biggest power company serving the northern and central parts of the state, remained at about 1.2 million overnight, according to the company's website, while Duke's outages in North and SC climbed to about 160,000.

In Miami-Dade County, there were about 574,000 outages, according to the AP.

Workers left last Thursday and arrived in Florida on Saturday.

Almost 4.5 million homes and businesses lost power in the storm that made landfall in the USA on Sunday, and utility officials say it will take weeks to restore electricity to everyone. Both reactors at its Turkey Point facility, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Miami, remained shut early Tuesday, while both reactors at its St. Lucie plant, about 120 miles (190 km) north of Miami, were operating at full power.

FPL said its two nuclear plants in Florida were safe.
