Results will be announced on November 15.

Andrew Pasco, one of thousands of people who packed the streets of Sydney for the "yes" campaign rally on Sunday, said he was anxious the polarising debate could discourage moderate Australians from voting.

The positive result for the equality campaign comes as the Australian Bureau of Statistics begins to send survey forms to 16 million Australians to gauge their thoughts about changing the marriage laws.

The bill still requires approval from parliament before it can be put into action. "We can climb this mountain".

Frustrated progressive members said they would side with the opposition Labor Party to secure same-sex marriage if the PM could not finally resolve the issue, though some conservative lawmakers threatened to resign if Turnbull did not stick to a public vote, threatening the PM's one-seat majority.

Howard said in a statement on the website of the Coalition for Marriage that there could not be changes to social institutions without wider consequences. It includes the Australian Christian Lobby and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

Despite growing support among sporting bodies for marriage equality and homosexual rights, few Australian athletes have come out as gay.

But the physical demands of constant performances and her pursuit of the highest standards night after night take their toll. Mother Monster didn't say how long we can expect the break to be, but said: "It doesn't mean I won't be creating".

However, "yes" campaigner Kerryn Phelps, the former chief of the Australian Medical Association, said the survey was about unifying the nation.

So far, 15 sports organisations have signed an open letter urging marriage equality, including Football Federation Australia, Basketball Australia, the National Rugby League and several Aussie Rules clubs.

Rally attendees Stephen Madden, 55, and David Long, 47, have been together for 21 years and want to get married.

"My mum would really like to have a legal son-in-law", Madden added.

Eggins agreed and said this weekend's rally was larger than any other rally he has attended. Police declined to comment on the numbers at both rallies.

Of those certain to post their ballot papers back, 70 percent said they would support gay marriage.
