Repeal of women driving ban tests Saudi reform drive

Women to be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's royalty still have far to go to liberate women from the so-called guardian system, a tribal tradition in which male relatives control numerous activities of women.

Such permits are not issued to women, which means it is illegal for them to drive.

"I?m being honest. I just cried".

"The major takeaway is a P.R. win when they needed it, when you look at criticisms they have faced recently", Coogle told me.

Saudi Arabia has been widely criticized for being the only country in the world that bans women from driving, despite ambitious government targets to increase their public role, especially in the workforce.

Not often that I refer you to the trendy New Yorker, but Middle Eastern expert Robin Wright has some interesting thoughts on King Salman's decree. There in that Kingdom, in the back seat, I would hold on for dear life until I found my fantastic Egyptian Christian driver, Zacchariah, who would observe the sedate 40mph speed that I felt comfortable in while the rest of the country drove routinely above 80mph and sometimes over 100 miles per hour. We must not forget that people were entertained by a Saudi woman terrifying house-keepers by going to family homes and humiliating domestic servants while recording the abuse on Snapchat. "But I will drive legally this time". For example, the police will have to be trained to interact with women in a way that they rarely do in Saudi Arabia, a society where men and women who are not related have little contact.

Brawl in Uganda parliament amid debate over limits to presidential terms
Lawmakers exchanged blows, kicks and even threw objects like microphone stand and chairs at each another. Nineteen people including Uganda's leading opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, were also arrested.

Rights groups and Saudi activists have long campaigned for the ban to be overturned, and some women have been arrested and jailed for defying the prohibition and taking the wheel. In a separate statement, the government said many senior religious leaders found no, quote, "impediment" in letting women drive.

Saudi women need to be convinced to stay in the country and work, rather than slip out of its borders any way they can.

But, at a small news conference at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, an exuberant Prince Khalid Salman, the Saudi ambassador, said women would be able to obtain driver's licences without having to ask permission from their husbands, fathers or any male guardian despite guardianship laws that give men power over their female relatives.

It was unclear whether women would require their guardian's permission to apply for a driving licence.
