Russian Federation begins much anticipated Zapad war game

Estonia to send observers to Zapad exercise

Thousands of Russian troops have launched joint military exercises with Belarus in what the British defence secretary has called a provocation to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, the military exercises will be held on seven training grounds and in two separate localities in the territory of Belarus.

In the drills, which cover a vast area from Belarus and Russia's Western borders up into the Arctic, the two countries' troops will battle a fake state invented for the objective.

Staged tactical events and live-fire exercises set to involve aircraft and air defense units will take place at Belarus' Lepelsky, Losvido, Borisovsky, Osipovichsky, Ruzhansky and Domanovsky training ranges, in the Dretun and Glubokoye areas in Belarus, and also at the Luzhsky, Strugi Krasnye, and Pravdinsky training ranges in Russian Federation. We have seen concentrate more and more troops as it goes.

But Nato claims Russian Federation has kept it in the dark and seems to be massively underreporting the scale of the exercises, which some of the alliance's eastern members insist could see more than 100,000 servicemen take part.

Bungie also recently confirmed that Nightfall and Raid Guided Games will go live on September 26th, at around 6pm BST. We've given you the when. "We renounce hate in all forms". "Together, as a team, you might even discover the how".

The war games spanning the borders of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have caused concern among NATO countries that Russian Federation could be planning military action at a time of tense relations with the West. NATO this summer deployed additional forces in eastern Europe and the Baltics.

Russian Federation and Belarus plan to practice amassing troops in a scenario that pits them against terrorists infiltrating their borders from three different countries. NATO's chief Jens Stoltenberg told the BBC that Russian Federation has a history of using "big military exercises as a disguise or a precursor for aggressive military actions against their neighbors". The participation of an armored force, the 1st Armored Guards Army, that Western planners view as a massive offensive fist, has prompted further skepticism that the exercises will only run defensive practices. Russia responded by stationing more strategic missiles and other forces in Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea where numerous Zapad drills will be held.

If we recall, last month, at Novo Selo Training Range in Bulgaria, some 11,000 (over-projected 25,000) troops including former Warsaw Pact countries, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria participated in a 10 day military exercise with a theme how to restart Cold War. With Russian troops already based in Belarus, some analysts and opposition figures in the country have suggested the Kremlin might seize the opportunity to expand its armed presence there. Compared to the U.S, Russian Federation is still a military underdog, and the fact that Belarus is its only partner in these exercises goes to show how Moscow's network of alliances has withered since Soviet times.

However, Russia has stressed that only 12,700 troops are taking part in the war games, which falls under the 13,000 threshold for mandatory monitoring under the Vienna agreement.
