State officials temporarily shut down Hollywood nursing home where 8 patients died

"A portion of the facility did, in fact, have power, that there was a hospital across the parking lot from this facility and that the nursing home was required to have a permanently installed operational generator", the power company spokesman Richard Beltran told CNN.

"It's a sad state of affairs", the police chief said.

"The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills is responsible for the safety of their patients", the statement said. Crews found several patients in varying degrees of medical distress and immediately began treatment. "Potentially" more people could die, he said.

More than 100 residents at the nursing home were transferred to neighboring branches of Memorial Regional Hospital, along with patients from a nearby facility that also was evacuated due to the police investigation, Hollywood city officials said.

The deaths, believed to be storm-related, would take the death toll from Irma in Florida to at least 18 and more than 55 overall including those in the hard-hit Caribbean.

Among the state's almost 700 nursing facilities, about 150 lacked power as of Wednesday morning, said the Florida Health Care Association, which represents most of the homes. Authorities have warned that these devices can be deadly, noting they can easily sicken or kill people inside homes. They do not, however, represent the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. "Although the details of these reported deaths are still under investigation, this situation is unfathomable". Jon reports: "As of Tuesday, [the facility] was reporting that everything was OK, that they were using portable air conditioners and fans".

It should be money well spent. "I can assure you that I will do my part and I will do my best to give you all a lovely fight". Forget the procession that was Mayweather vs McGregor - this could be the most thrilling middleweight contest in decades.

Long before this past week, however, the facility had a history of poor inspections. "I tell everybody, if you have family in a nursing home, check on them". Michel is listed in state corporate records as Larkin's president, as well.

Police were first called to the facility at about 4:30 a.m. but authorities did not arrive until after 6 a.m., officials said. The Florida Health Care Association, an industry group for long-term care, released a statement emphasizing the strain Hurricane Irma has put on nursing homes and care centers.

That 2006 case involved a $15.4 million settlement.

Patients were evacuated to Memorial Regional Hospital and other facilities in the Memorial Healthcare System.

In Broward County, more than 212,000 electricity accounts were without power Thursday morning, state officials said.

"Was not interested to get there", she said, blaming Florida Power and Light, not the nursing home staff, for the deaths. Hollywood Public Affairs Director Raelin Story said there is no official cause of death yet, but a number were having respiratory issues. The move came after workers repaired three water main breaks.
