Nuclear powers say a ban won't work.

Scores of police were soon on the scene but did not appear to be intent on brining the protest to a quick end.

Dozens of countries signed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons on Wednesday amid tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests, although the United States, Britain, France and others boycotted the event at the annual United Nations gathering of world leaders.

Before declaring the convention open for signing, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, described it as historic, and recognized the countries that promoted and supported it, as well as the civil society.

With the North Korean nuclear crisis looming large, 51 countries were to sign a new treaty yesterday outlawing nuclear weapons that has been fiercely opposed by the United States and other nuclear powers.

"So, ever since that period, we've always been very much a strong advocate for de-nuclearization of the world", Onyeama said.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted on July 7 and established a comprehensive set of prohibitions on participating in any nuclear weapon activities.

Chief Justice David Maraga mentioned only "irregularities and illegalities", notably in the transmission of election results. Judges described the obscurity around the forms 34A as a " mysterious puzzle of labyrinthine proportions".

Japan, the only nation ever to suffer nuclear attacks, did not sign the document out of deference to the USA, on which the country relies for military protection.

The treaty is slated to take effect 90 days after at least 50 nations have ratified it. They instead pledged commitment to a decades-old Non-Proliferation Treaty, which aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology.

The President of the General Assembly, Miroslav Lajcák, noted at the ceremony that the Treaty demonstrates the will of Member States to bring about change.

More than 120 countries approved the treaty in July over opposition from nuclear-armed countries and their allies.

Speaking on how to get the nearly 60 countries who boycotted the adoption of the treaty convinced to join the treaty, including the problems associated with the enforcement, Onyeama said it was a question of exposed strategy and trust.

They would be barred from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, otherwise acquiring, possessing or stockpiling nuclear weapons "under any circumstances". "But we haven't got there yet", Onyeama noted.
