On 22 September 2017, Transport for London ("TfL") concluded that Uber, the ride-hailing app, will not be issued a new private hire licence after expiry of its current licence on 30 September 2017.

In its decision, TfL said Uber's approach to operating its business demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility, pointing to a failure to report serious criminal offences, its approach to medical certificates, and its use of Greyball software that can stop regulatory bodies accessing Uber's full app.

Police in London accused Uber last month of not reporting a sexual assault by a driver on a passenger, allowing the driver to strike again. In an open letter, Dara Khosrowshahi acknowledged that Uber "got things wrong along the way", and offered an apology.

On Friday, Khosrowshahi asked London to "please work with us to make things right".

"We will appeal this decision on behalf of millions of Londoners, but we do so with the knowledge that we must also change", Khosrowshahi wrote in his letter.

ANY hopes of Uber coming to Christchurch could be put on hold while an appeals process takes place on the transport company's London operation.

TfL made the decision amidst concerns about the safety of cabs working for Uber, as well as questions over the "gig economy" working practices of the company and how it treats its drivers.

The move echoed Uber's strategy in disputes with other cities.

Uber CEO apologies to Londoners on behalf of company.

"As mayor of London I welcome innovative new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service - but providing an innovative service is not an excuse for not following the rules". "They have let down their drivers and customers by failing, in the view of TfL, to act as a fit and proper operator", Khan said in his latest statement.

He reiterated the point as he responded to tens of thousands of people signing a petition calling for the decision to be reversed. "It's been fantastic to hear your stories of Uber improving lives across this city-from drivers who use our app to earn a living, to riders who rely on us to get home safely after a night out".

While the latter is seemingly aimed at TfL's claims that Uber deliberately under-reported crimes, Khosrowshahi was careful to avoid directly addressing the allegations with legal proceedings underway.

The company has also lodged an appeal, and as such, can operate for an unknown period beyond the deadline while the appeal is considered.

While many would cite the previous monopoly of taxi companies, and their rude, expensive, largely uncharted services, and think, "well, good", the impact on drivers goes far beyond the on-road competition for fares.

"If you play by the rules you're welcome in London, if you don't, don't be surprised if TfL takes action against you".
