UK authorities seize mafia boss Dawood Ibrahim's assets worth INR42,000 crore

In a boost for Indian agencies, authorities in the United Kingdom have seized properties belonging to fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, the media reported on Wednesday. Mr Modi, during his November 12-14, 2015 tour, had reportedly handed over a dossier concerning the underworld gangster to his then British counterpart David Cameron.

Dawood is on India's Most Wanted list for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. He is now believed to be based out of Karachi, from where he runs an illegal gambling ring and is also a part of terror acts masterminded by Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

The dreaded gangster also carries a rewards totalling Dollars 25 million on his head for any information leading to his arrest, according to the Forbes business magazine.

The UK released an updated list of financial sanctions earlier this month and Dawood was the only "Indian national" on the list. Post the bombings, he fled the country and is understood to be hiding in Pakistan.

In January this year, some unconfirmed reports had said that the United Arab Emirates government may also have moved to seize assets of Dawood Ibrahim on its soil. Dawood's place of birth is recorded as Kher, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, and his nationality is listed as "Indian" with a recorded Indian passport which was subsequently revoked by the Government of India.

Pakistan has consistently denied that Ibrahim is in Pakistan despite India maintaining that that he continues to live in a palatial house in Karachi. These are: Dawood Ebrahim, Sheikh Dawood Hassan, Abdul Hamid Abdul Aziz, Anis Ibrahim, Aziz Dilip, Daud Hasan Shaikh Ibrahim Kaskar, Daud Ibrahim Memon Kaskar, Dawood Hasan Ibrahim Kaskar, Dawood Ibrahim Memon, Dawood Sabri, Kaskar Dawood Hasan, Shaikh Mohd Ismail Abdul Rehman, Dowood Hassan Shaikh Ibrahim, Shaikh Ismail Abdul and Hizrat. Mehrishi had said the government is taking all required action so that Dawood could be brought back to India.
