The administration of former President Barack Obama agreed to accept as many as 1,250 of Australia's refugees - mostly from Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka - in a deal that some saw as repayment for Australia's acceptance of Honduran and Salvadoran refugees from a camp in Costa Rica under a us -led resettlement program. In exchange for this hospitality, Australia will resettle some of the Central American migrants who are being held in US -run detention centers in Costa Rica.

Trump made it clear to Turnbull he was not a fan of the deal during their first phone call following Trump's inauguration in January, details of which were later revealed in a leaked transcript published by the Washington Post in August.

Refugees and advocates cautioned against assuming the USA would take the full allotment, with its processing so far concentrated on individuals with applications that are both easier to verify through background checks and originate from citizens of nations with closer ties to the United States.

U.S. -Iran relations have been strained under Trump, who called Tehran a "rogue nation" on Tuesday.

USA officials are carrying out a tough vetting process, Turnbull said on Wednesday.

Limbo has finally ended for at least some of the refugees held in Australia's offshore detention camps. "This will be an orderly process. It will not be rushed".

Turkey could stop Iraq's Kurdish oil exports for referendum
Al-Abadi warned that he would intervene militarily if the referendum , which he described as unconstitutional, provoked violence. Kurds of Iraq and Turkey and even some of Iran's Kurds have for sometime wanted an independent Kurdish state.

To date, it has determined one refugee meets those requirements and that person will also be resettled in the coming weeks.

Where are the refugees from?

There are 868 people in Papua New Guinea of whom 679 have been found to be refugees; Nauru has 1,124 people, with 976 of them having been found to be refugees.

Malcolm Turnbull said more people would follow the initial allocation. America is one good country.

Refugee advocate Ian Rintoul said the three Sudanese refugees would be flown to Port Moresby at the weekend and to the United States two days later.

"Iranians are about a third of the refugees on Manus but are only about 10 percent of the ones interviewed so far", said Ian Rintol, spokesman for the Refugee Action Coalition, told Reuters.

Australia is under increased pressure to resettle asylum-seekers from Manus Island because that center is due to close on October 31. "It seems there had been some discriminatory selection", he said.

According to Reuters, the first people to be notified of the resettlements were from Bangladesh, Sudan, and Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, although representatives of Australia's immigration minister, Peter Dutton, refused to comment on the story.
