What to do if Equifax hack hits you?

Equifax, one of the three main credit reporting companies, has faced widespread criticism over its response to a massive data breach that has exposed millions of Americans' personal information.

Additionally, credit card numbers for about 209,000 people were exposed, as was "personal identifying information" on roughly 182,000 customers involved in credit report disputes.

Equifax is offering consumers this program for free credit monitoring for a year.

Lorelei Salas, the commissioner of the city's Department of Consumer Affairs, lambasted Equifax's response to the breach in a September 8 letter to the company. If you were an affected blood donor, there was little chance of slipping through the communications net.

"Will we be reimbursed for having to pay for credit freezes?" one consumer wrote to Equifax on Twitter "I did 4 over the weekend, I do not think that I should have to pay for it!"

Equifax also encouraged customers to enter their last name and the last six digits of their social security number on an incident website to see if they were potentially impacted.

In turn, there was some confusion over whether the site was legitimate and anger over the way it was rolled out.

The site says once you've submitted your information you will receive a message indicating whether you've been affected. Some are considering Equifax's own credit monitoring service. Monday is the first day you can sign up.

In announcing the breach, Equifax stated it would offer free credit monitoring to everyone. But you can opt out of that provision if you notify the company in writing within 30 days.

Because, from the other perspective, it's just as easy to see why one club abstained and the other five clubs voted against the move.

Be vigilant in checking your accounts and your credit.

Then, request a copy of your credit report.

Equifax gets its information without you even knowing from banks, lenders, credit card companies, and retailers. You can also call Equifax (1-800-349-9960), Experian (1-888-397-3742) or TransUnion (1-888-909-8872). Extended fraud alerts do require this, but typically require a police report to put into place - they last for 7 years. And all of it could be used for identity theft.

The language has now been taken out of the agreement and consumers are free to pursue legal action against the credit reporting company. It will last for 90 days and can be renewed.

Clark said a credit freeze is the only answer in this case.

Equifax often charges consumers a fee, including if they need to replace the insecure credit-freeze PIN previously generated by the data broker.

Check your free credit reports. Make sure you temporarily lift the freeze if you are in the market for a loan.

"It's a huge deal", said Tim Crosby, senior consultant with security-assessment firm Spohn, "You would expect these guys to have compartmentalized this data far enough away from a Web server - that there would not be any way to directly access it".

The complaint also cites the fact that the company took more than a month before making the breach public and they were not able to disclose the reason why.
