Police and US military officials in Germany are warning consumers who buy food or medicine on the local economy to look out for tampered products after jars of baby food in southern Germany were found to be poisoned.

The blackmailer claimed to have poisoned items in German supermarkets, with traces later found in baby food.

Since his arrest on Friday afternoon, prosecutors have said they are confident that the man in custody was behind the blackmail attempt.

Authorities released surveillance camera stills of the suspect Thursday, prompting hundreds of tips from the public. Officials located the jars and found they contained ethylene glycol but said there's no evidence that anyone was poisoned.

But it prompted the nationwide appeal for information on the suspect and a warning about the potential of other contaminated food, which authorities repeated Saturday.

He warned consumers to be on the lookout for packaging that had been tampered with when buying their groceries.

The suspect, who as of Saturday had not confessed, faces 5 to 15 years of jail time for extortion under threat of force. Prosecutors are deciding whether to charge him with attempted murder, which could entail a life sentence.
