Massive gas explosion at petrol station in Ghana sends residents fleeing

Police said the blasts happened in the Atomic Junction roundabout area of Legon in northeast Accra at about 1930 GMT.

The blaze, in the suburb of Legon, was later largely brought under control, government minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah told local radio, according to Reuters news agency.

Ghana's capital was the scene of a similar fire and explosion at a petrol station in June 2015 which killed more than 150. "There are quite a number also injured".

"There was some panic and we all just moved away from the scene", said eyewitness George Agbey. An even more massive explosion took place at a gas station in 2015 which claimed the life of nearly 100 people.

It is also near a high school and the University of Ghana campus.

The Government has confirmed that seven people have so far died in Saturday's gas explosion at Atomic Junction.

While authorities will deal with the backlash and politics of regulation later on, in the meantime, they have responded quickly with over 200 law enforcement and fire service personnel deployed to the blast zone.

In May, an explosion at a factory in the Western Regional capital of Takoradi happened as a tanker was discharging liquefied petroleum gas at the Ghana Household Utilities Manufacturing Company factory.

Infrastructure in Accra, a city of roughly 7 million people, has failed to keep pace with population growth after years of rapid economic expansion.
