Railway Board chief raps bureaucrats for receiving him at airport

The death toll in the stampede on a foot-over-bridge (FOB) linking two railways stations here has gone up to 23 with a critically injured person succumbing at the KEM hospital on Saturday. This shall be done in parallel across India as well.

Goyal has announced a high-level probe headed by chief safety officer of Western Railway.

As a Rajya Sabha MP, Sachin Tendulkar had questioned if the Railways had "identified high-density stations which have only one single bridge like Mumbra, Parel and others, for additional bridge construction to enhance safety during peak hours". Replying to his letter, Mr Prabhu had given his assurance that the FOB would be extended and widened and even sanctioned Rs 11.86 crore for the same. General Managers of Western and Central Railway AK Gupta and DK Sharma, respectively, also attended the meeting. As per the reports, dozens of people took shelter on the bridge from the sudden thunderstorm that led to the deadly stampede. In any case, a wider foot over bridge would have prevented a stampede from killing commuters.

Railway minister Piyush Goyal brushed aside criticism of the bullet train project in the wake of the Elphinstone Road tragedy, on the grounds that it is required for development in the country.

Troy Upset Finds Life In Death Valley
Troy got on the board first after halftime when Josh Anderson ran into the endzone with a 7-yard rush to push the lead to 24-7. Troy 17, LSU 7 (4:00): Brennan connects with Foster Moreau for a 7-yard touchdown pass to finally put the Tigers on the board.

"We saw several people falling off the staircase", said one commuter.

The horror crush has been blamed on heavy rain, overcrowding and some locals have speculated people began to run when rumours circulated the bridge was collapsing. "Better than this Piyush, we get tasty Piyush (milk drink) at our Aaswad hotel", Raj Thackeray. "After that, people just panicked and started rushing down".

According railway sources, a train had come into platform no 1 at Parel, going towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), as well as platform no. 2 at Elphinstone Road. Unless and until people from outside don't stop coming to Mumbai, nothing is going to change. As four trains passed by in quick succession at the station, there was a huge crowd and from the other end, people took the stairs to climb to the FOB.
