A Giant Mysterious Hole Has Emerged In Antarctica And Scientists Still Don't Know The Reason

Scientists have discovered a hole as big as the state of ME or Lake Superior in the frozen ice of Antarctica's Weddell Sea, according to a report in the National Geographic. The phenomenon is known as a polynya - an area of open water where sea ice should be, the National Snow and Ice Data Center said. Known by the Russian word polynya, the area surrounded by solid sea ice is hundreds of kilometers from the ice edge and researchers based at Princeton University were able to identify it thanks to satellite images. As per a report published by Motherboard, the scientists are yet not sure about the cause of opening up of this hole.

The harsh winter in Antarctica makes it hard to find holes like this one, so it can be difficult to study them. Perhaps we'll have the answers before the hole fills in again. After that, it disappeared and didn't re-emerge for decades. This isn't the first time it's been spotted, having appeared past year for a brief period as well, and long before that it was detected back in the 1970s.

The hole measures some 30,000 square miles - almost the size of SC. Still, it's far smaller than its 1970s version, which had reached 300,000 square kilometers.

A "polynya" is a large ice-free area that develops in an otherwise frozen sea; the features are commonly seen in both the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. But this polynya's reappearance is a mystery to scientists. "It's just remarkable that this polyna went away for four years and then came back". But what makes this hols mysterious is that it is located far from sea ice coastline (where they generally appear). "Denser, colder water sinks to the bottom of the ocean, while warmer water comes to the surface, which can keep the polynia open once it starts".

Aarushi case verdict: No conclusive evidence against the duo, says HC
The trial court had stated 26 points of evidence on the basis of which it found the couple guilty. The movie was a retelling of investigation theories behind the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj murder case.

Due to the harshness of the Antarctic winter and the difficulties of operating within its pack ice, there exist few direct observations of these polynyas and their impacts on the atmospheric and oceanic circulation, researchers said.

Without the insulating effect of sea ice cover, a polynya allows the atmosphere and ocean to exchange heat, momentum and moisture leading to significant impacts on climate.

That robot has already begun sending the data, which is being processed by the scientists.
