Panama Papers case: Nawaz's son-in-law arrested on return to Pakistan

Sharif's son-in-law, retired army Capt. Mohammad Safdar, who is also a member of the lower house, was taken into custody from Islamabad airport on late Sunday soon after his arrival from London along with his wife Maryam Nawaz.

The court asked whether Nawaz Sharif should be given exemption for 15 days over which NAB prosecutor appealed to issue his non-bailable arrest warrant for not attending the hearing despite assurance.

On Monday, the court adjourned the cases till October 13 summoning Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar for indictment, besides separating cases of Hassan and Hussain.

Maryam said the questions taken up the Supreme Court-mandated Joint Investigation Team regarding her family businesses continue to remain questions "because they are false allegations with no answers".

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has dropped hint that Hussain and Hassan Nawaz, sons of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, may not appear before the accountability court, taking advantage of their foreign residency.

Sanaullah blamed that Nawaz Sharif, who always ensures Pakistan's progress, is being personally targeted.

The judge barred Safdar from leaving Pakistan without its permission but rejected the NAB's request to confiscate his passport.

The anti corruption authorities, however, allowed Mariyum Nawaz, who is touted as Sharif's political successor, to leave after she produced her bail documents.

Talking to reporters after a hearing on Monday, Maryam Nawaz said that her brothers would make their own decision regarding their appearance before the court.

She has since undergone three surgeries and remains in London.

Sharif, 67, was disqualified by the country's Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case in July this year.

According to legal experts, in such a situation the accountability court may separate the case of the present accused or deem those absent as absconders.
