On Wednesday, NBC reported that during a major national security meeting on July 20, President Trump expressed a desire to dramatically expand America's nuclear arsenal.

Trump starred on the NBC reality show "The Apprentice" for several years before making his successful presidential bid in 2016.

His missive came shortly after he vehemently denied an NBC News report that he asked to dramatically expand the USA nuclear arsenal.

Trump's threat came shortly after he claimed an NBC news story about his nuclear ambitions is "pure fiction".

According to the network, Mr Trump had been shown a slide that showed the steady reduction of United States nukes since the late sixties, in line with post-cold war treaties. Officials told Trump that there are legal and practical reasons why the nations' nuclear weapons stockpile could not be increased, NBC sources said, later telling the network's reporting team that no expansion is planned. "That was just fake news by NBC", he said.

If the United States were to increase its nuclear arsenal, that could break with years of doctrine and violate worldwide disarmament treaties that have been signed over the years by every president since the late Ronald Reagan.

"It's frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write, and people should look into it", Trump said to a group of reporters on Wednesday.

In a February interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Conway bemoaned "fake news" coverage of the Trump administration and defined it as "presumptive negativity about us".

Since November, Conway has blasted at least three news stories on Twitter as "fake news", including a New York Times article about her tendency to publicly discuss Trump's private thinking.

The US Constitution is understood to guarantee press freedom, but television networks rely on access to broadcast frequencies granted by government agencies.

During a joint meeting with Canadian Prime Minsiter Justin Trudeau at the White House Trump said that the current nuclear arsenal of the United States is already sufficient, and that no increase is needed.

During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Mr Trump declared that the U.S. would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.

Indeed, Trump's threat seems rather hard to carry out given the Federal Communications Commission does not directly license networks.
