Saudi Arabia's King Salman Arrives Russia for First Visit

Photos show Putin personally pour a cup of tea for his royal guest at the Kremlin Palace.

This was the first ever visit to Russian Federation by a Saudi monarch and experts have viewed King Salman's trip as signalling a shift in global power equations.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud has been on his first ever state visit to Moscow, where he met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman was due to leave Moscow on Saturday after a historic four-day visit that symbolised the rapidly closening ties between Riyadh and Russian Federation. That marked a shift for the kingdom, which buys most of its military kit from the United States and Britain.

More recently, the two countries have had differences over Iran, Saudi Arabia's main rival in the Middle East, and the war in Syria.

"We aim to strengthen our relations in the interests of peace and security, in the interests of developing the world economy", the Saudi king responded, according to AFP news agency.

King Selman's meetings in Moscow include energy market, Middle East, civil war in Syria and Iran.

Jubilation in Egypt after first World Cup berth in 28 years
In Cairo, an army helicopter dropped hundreds of Egyptian flags on thousands of fans gathered at the city's iconic Tahrir square. Nigeria became the first African country to qualify for the World Cup after defeating Zambia on Saturday.

Novak said the two countries' business circles maintain intensive dialogue, and he pointed out that the Saudi delegation to Moscow included 85 chief executives of major Saudi companies.

Several interdepartmental agreements and commercial contracts were signed, including the agreement on development of the cooperation between the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told journalists that "relations between Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia have reached a historic moment".

This is just part of the extravagant preparations made for the Saudi monarch's visit. US light crude was up 10 cents at $50.08.

Relations have improved - President Donald Trump began his first foreign trip with a stop in Riyadh and signed a almost $110 billion arms deal with the country.

Russian firms are also discussing deals with Saudi Aramco, such as providing drilling services in Saudi Arabia, and Russian oil giant Rosneft's interest in crude trading, Novak added. Relations improved under the Trump administration, but Washington's focus in Syria continues to be on fighting the Islamic State group, not on ousting Assad. "The political will of Moscow and Riyadh for deeper cooperation on the widest range of issues is clear".
