Local pharmacist Zohaib Abbas says a good indication of our flu season is to look to Australia.

Australia is now suffering through one of its worst flu seasons in recent years because of H3N2, which is also the strain responsible for the Hong Kong Flu pandemic of the late 1960's which killed 750,000 people.

That's why DHEC in a recent news release has urged South Carolinians to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu by being vaccinated.

Influenza cases are broken down by specific age groups and counties, the number of deaths resulting from influenza and the current influenza activity level being reported in the state. "The flu shot can help an individual from getting the flu".

Not necessarily, but there are currently very low levels of the flu, which means now is the time to be vaccinated.

Experts recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated against the flu but it is especially important for certain people to be vaccinated due to high risk of having serious flu-related complications.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

There are three public health flu clinics in Nanaimo in November.

Symptoms of influenza can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are available from October 11 through October 21.
