At a press conference, Supervisor Joseph Saladino called on "radical mayors" to send Columbus statues to Massapequa, "home to one of the largest Italian-American populations in the nation", in order to protect "the legacy of this great Italian explorer, navigator and colonizer", because "most of us are exhausted of those trying to rewrite history".

Vivolo says Italian-Americans are proud of their heritage and respect all ethnicities.

To try to take it away, I m sorry, but they re climbing up the wrong tree, George Iannuzzo, co-founder and past president of the Tewksbury Sons of Italy, said of calls to replace Columbus Day.

As Breitbart News noted in August, the city voted over the summer to replace Columbus Day with "Indigenous Peoples Day", noting the presence of Native American civilizations in the Americas before Columbus's famous voyage to the New World in 1492.

Columbus Day parades are also caught up in the winds of change. Columbus Day was designated a federal holiday back in 1937.

"We discovered Columbus, lost on our shores, sick, destitute, and wrapped in rags".

Sessions issues religious freedom guidelines which undermine LGBTI rights
The Trump administration has issued a directive giving the go-ahead for religious businesses to discriminate against LGBT people. Sessions' guidance is a follow-up to an executive order President Trump issued in May regarding "religious freedom".

The mayor will join Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Comptroller Scott Stringer and others for Manhattan's annual Columbus Day Parade, which kicks off before noon on 44th Street and Fifth Avenue and travels up to 72nd Street. Munro said. "I think it's really damaging to our children, and teaches them that indigenous people are not important".

"As we mark this rich history, we must also acknowledge the pain and suffering reflected in the stories of Native Americans who had long resided on this land prior to the arrival of European newcomers", which included "violence, deprivation, and disease", Obama wrote a year ago. "And while we can't change the past, we can acknowledge and make that history right today". Trump noted in an October 6 proclamation for Columbus Day that "The voyage was a remarkable and then-unparalleled feat that helped launch the age of exploration and discovery".

For instance, Cambridge previous year passed a resolution declaring Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October. The world's largest celebration of Italian-American culture, the parade includes 35,000 marchers and more than 100 groups, including bands, floats and contingents. But while more and more cities are adopting a change to Indigenous People's day, not everyone likes dumping Columbus.

Other explorers - namely Vikings, such as Leif Erikson - made landfall on North America, in what is now Newfoundland, centuries before Columbus set sail.

The Marist Poll surveyed 1,224 adults September 11-13, funded in partnership with the Knights of Columbus.
