US Navy training aircraft crashes near Tellico Plains

The U.S. Navy said a T-45 jet is believed to have crashed near Tellico Plains, Tennessee.

CBS affiliate WVLT-TV writes that the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said the jet crashed in the Cherokee National Forest.

Two pilots were aboard the aircraft, an instructor and a student.

The U.S. Navy has confirmed that the two pilots aboard a military aircraft that crashed in the Cherokee National Forest did not surive the crash.

Investigators are checking to see if the crash involved a T-45 based out of Meridian, Mississippi.

Tellico Plains is about 60 miles southwest of Knoxville, Tennessee.

It is unknown at this time if there are any injuries.

The crash comes just after USN officials announced last week that its trainer fleet has resumed regular flights following a five-month grounding caused by contamination concerns over the system that generates and supplies oxygen to the training jet's pilots.

"It's something we're going to have to look into", she says.
