The day marks the birth of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru who is the founder of Sikhism.

Delegations of all three committees of Sikhs included Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC), Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Delhi, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) of India have sent their delegates for Baba Guru Nanak birth anniversary celebrations. The Guru Nanak Jayanti falls in the month of November on 4th day.

That's what B.C. Premier John Horgan had to say today - in an email from the Office of the Premier - in recognition of Gurpurab, which celebrates the birth of the first Sikh guru. Guru Nanak was the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus and was born in 1469. He also tried different professions like agriculture, cattle-tending, and shop-keeping but failed to succeed.

This year will mark the 548th birthday of Guru Nanak. Devotees visit Gurudwara to offer prayers and listen Gurubani of Guru Granth Sahib. The procession is led by Panj Pyaras.

The day begins with the singing of morning hymns and is followed by Katha and Kirtan, which is recital of scriptures and hymns in the praise of the Guru.

"Guru Nanak Dev Ji's universal message of love, compassion, equality, peace and brotherhood is not restricted to a particular caste, colour, creed, religion or region, but transcends the barriers of time and space, thus making it relevant till eternity", Singh said. The processions which start from Gurudwaras are decorated with lights and flowers.
