In interviews with the U.S. media overnight, including Bloomberg, Jeff Holden, Uber's chief product officer, confirmed the ride-hailing company had signed an agreement to work with NASA on "unmanned traffic management" systems.

"UberAir will be performing far more flights on a daily basis than has ever been done before".

Uber first revealed its plan to introduce its ride-sharing to the skies a year ago but, The Verge noted, still faces major obstacles. "Doing this safely and efficiently is going to require a foundational change in airspace management technologies", Jeff Holden, chief product officer at Uber, said in a statement on Wednesday. But on Wednesday Uber announced it would also be running demonstrator flights in Los Angeles in 2020. It's an electric autonomous aircraft that can take off and land vertically.

The four-person ridesharing flights won't become a reality anytime soon but Holden said there are plans for demonstrations of the flying auto network in Los Angeles, in addition to previously announced cities, Dallas and Dubai, in 2020.

Most notably, the aircraft and the supporting infrastructure envisioned by the company does not exist yet.

In an unlikely partnership, NASA has sought the services of Uber to build air control software that will manage the flying taxis of the future.

A special effects video the company released on Twitter showed how the technology would work, portraying a woman hailing an uberAIR and then riding an elevator to the roof of a tall building to catch her flying ride.

Alex Comisar, Garcetti's press secretary, said discussions with the company operating the technology in the city are in the preliminary stages. The company's vision involves a fleet of vertical take-off and landing aircraft that will fly at a low altitude, and will be able to pick up and drop off up to four passengers at selected locations. "L.A.is the ideal testing ground for new technology, and I look forward to seeing it grow in the coming years", Garcetti said.

According to a forecast from Uber, a current trip between San Francisco and San Jose at rush hour would take two hours and cost around $111.
