"When this project is complete, our main campus will be comprised of 131 buildings - including the equivalent of 180 [American] football fields of new and renovated space".

The campus will include space for up to 55,000 employees-Microsoft now employs 47,000 people in the Redmond area. Now, we can add Microsoft to the growing list of companies looking to spruce up their campus. Instead, the firm envisions the new campus as a place filled with open spaces and plenty of light. All auto parking will go underground, and in its place will spring up sports fields, a tree-lined boulevard, and a two-acre open plaza that can hold up to 12,000 people for events. Microsoft is investing billions of dollars to redevelop it campus, and the company will tear down 12 old buildings to create the bigger 18 replacements. Set to start in earnest in fall 2018, the project will see 18 new buildings and 2.5 million square feet of new office space added to the campus. The new design also features a community space for 8,000 to 12,000 people in an open-air plaza and outdoor areas including running and walking trails, sports facilities and green spaces.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), meanwhile, has built over the last decade a dense, a high-rise urban campus that has completely transformed Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, and more recently, the northern edge of downtown.

The campus will primarily be built for pedestrian and bike traffic as all vehicles will be moved to an underground parking facility.

PixabayMicrosoft Redmond campus - what are the plans? However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach. The campus will also be connected to WA-520 on both sides and it will tie into the future Redmond Technology Transit Station linking the campus to Link Light Rail in 2023.

"We've focused on the cultural transformation of the company".

As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can't think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation.
