New trilogy of Star Wars films coming from Rian Johnson

Disney Studios Announces New Trilogy of Star Wars

"The Last Jedi", which follows on from 2015's hit film "The Force Awakens" and is expected to focus on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), will be in theaters on December 15.

For Kennedy, the move looks to bring stability to the franchise's directing chair after the very public firings of "Star Wars" franchise directors Colin Trevorrow (who was replaced by J.J. Abrams) and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (who were replaced by Ron Howard). Once The Force Awakens was released to financial and critical acclaim, the movie managed to rekindle the Star Wars flame, showing people that they could trust in the franchise again.

Rian Johnson is the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film that continues Rey's journey to finding Luke Skywalker.

He will also write and direct the first in the trilogy, and his frequent collaborator Ram Bergman will produce.

How to Avoid Traffic: NASA and Uber Plan to Offer Flying Taxis
Most notably, the aircraft and the supporting infrastructure envisioned by the company does not exist yet. But on Wednesday Uber announced it would also be running demonstrator flights in Los Angeles in 2020.

The force of "Star Wars" lifted Walt Disney Co shares as the promise of a new film trilogy overshadowed disappointing quarterly results and struggles at the media company's television business.

Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, it has rolled out two films, with a third, "The Last Jedi", coming in December. "Rian will do unbelievable things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy", Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement.

"Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it". Such a massive and lucrative undertaking would surely go beyond the basic idea of a new trilogy.

The most interesting thing about this new trio of films is that Lucasfilm has specifically stated that it will not deal with the Skywalker family. With the Star Wars universe as big as it is, there are so many directions the series could potentially take.
