Marshall referred to himself as Virginia's "chief homophobe".

Once Ms Roem is sworn in January, she will also be the first openly transgender person elected and seated in a state legislature in the U.S., according to the Victory Fund, a political action committee that works to get openly LGBTQ people elected, and has supported Ms Roem. In that time, Marshall wrote an anti-gay marriage amendment and sponsored Virginia's transgender bathroom bill (which infamously banned students from using the bathroom that corresponded to their gender identity and required administrators to out trans kids to their parents), as well as a ban on gay people serving in the National Guard-just lots and lots of bad stuff. Roem unseats the incumbent, Republican Robert G. Marshall, who held the seat since 1992.

The race between Roem and Marshall to represent Virginia's 13th district, which encompasses Prince William County and Manassas Park, had been rooted in ideological opposites.

Roem raised $500,000 in donations, much of it coming from LGBT advocates and other supporters across the country, out raising Marshall 3-1, the Washington Post reported.

Maintaining a steady social media presence, Roem did a number of public appearances and interviews as well. She says she was very specific about the issues her campaign was built on, and it resonated- in part, because of her background. Roem is a career journalist who worked for years at the Gainesville Times; she provides vocals for the thrash metal band Cab Ride Home.

In her Oscar-worthy acceptance speech, Jenkins said: "As an African-American trans-identified woman, I know firsthand the feeling of being marginalized, left out, thrown under the bus. It was great. I could just keep doing my job".

Michelle Kaufusi became the first woman elected mayor in the 157-year history of Provo, the third-largest city in Utah, on Tuesday night.

She added that there were many stories that were run about her being a transgender rather than her qualifications for office.

This video shows Roem's victory speech at the election night watch party.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Marshall said: 'For 26 years I've been proud to fight for you, and fight for our future. "Though we all wish tonight would have turned out differently, I am deeply grateful for your support and effort over the years". "I'm committed to continue the fight for you, but in a different role going forward".
