U.S. President Donald Trump left talks with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during the gala dinner marking ASEAN's 50th anniversary in Manila Philippines

The Philippines president surprised his guests at an ASEAN summit gala dinner when he broke out in song, which Rodrigo Duterte joked he sang "upon the orders of the commander in chief of the United States". "Human rights briefly came up in the context of the Philippines' fight against illegal drugs", Sanders said. He is set to also attend the 12th East Asia meet on Tuesday.

"Whoa, whoa", Duterte said, according to a report from the White House press pool.

A communications official with the Duterte administration said the Philippines president and Trump "really hit it off". The Indian Prime Minister arrived in the Philippines capital on Sunday for a three-day visit.

A joint statement after the meeting said the two sides "underscored that human rights and the dignity of human life are essential, and agreed to continue mainstreaming the human rights agenda in their national programs".

The plight of the Rohingya has brought outrage from around the world and there have been calls for democracy champion Suu Kyi to be stripped of the Nobel peace prize she won in 1991 because she has not condemned the military's actions.

President Rodrigo Duterte did not attend a meeting between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations due to a conflict of schedule, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
