Uber's massive hack: What we know

Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

According to Bloomberg, the hackers were able to steal the information by breaking into the accounts of two Uber engineers by using the GitHub coding site.

This isn't his first run-in with the ride-hailing company - just previous year his office reached a settlement with Uber over its collection and use of riders' personal information and its delayed disclosure of a 2014 data breach. The stolen data included 600,000 U.S. drivers' licence numbers, but no social security numbers, trip locations or other data.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", said a statement from chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over at the ridesharing giant in August.

"Given the current climate around data security and breaches it is astonishing that Uber paid off the hackers and kept this breach under wraps for a year", said David Kennerley, director of threat research at Webroot. Instead, the company paid hackers to delete the data and keep the breach quiet.

What did Uber pay to cover up the cyber attack?

After finding an archive of driver and rider information, the attackers emailed Uber demanding money.

News of the leak comes on the heels of revelations the Australian Broadcasting Corporation accidentally exposed Amazon Web Services S3 bucket containing a large amount of user data - an error that also recently led to almost 50,000 Australians' PII being leaked online by a government contractor. "While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes", Khosrowshahi reassured.

At the time of the data breach, Uber was negotiating with USA regulators investigating separate claims of privacy violations.

Sharing her excitement with her Instagram followers, Bella posted a pic of herself in the wings, writing: "this. just. happened (.SHE SMILES!)".

"It doesn't appear that happened here", he said.

Uber also fired two employees who were responsible for providing information to hackers.

Earlier in 2016, the company reached a settlement with the NY attorney general requiring it to take steps to be more vigilant about protecting the information that its app stores about its riders. Please let us know via the Help Center if you see anything unexpected or unusual related to your Uber account. The chief security officer and one of his deputies were ousted for their actions following the hack.

Khosrowshahi said that what he learned about Uber's failure to notify users or regulators prompted corrective actions.

Bloomberg first reported news of the hack.

It's also the latest major breach involving a prominent company that didn't notify the people that could be potentially harmed for months or even years after the break-in occurred. A hacker accessed Uber data on more than 100,000 drivers in May 2014. It was also in blue moon due to the sexual harassment case. In a coincidentally timed announcement shortly before Uber's hacking disclosure Tuesday, Whitman said she was stepping down as head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

Khosrowshahi inherited a litany of scandals and a toxic workplace culture when he replaced Kalanick.
