You Can Soon Check If You've Interacted With Russian Trolls on Facebook

Facebook is creating a tool to let people see what Russian propaganda they may have followed.

On Wednesday, Facebook announced that it would create a "portal to enable people on Facebook to learn which of the Internet Research Agency Facebook Pages or Instagram accounts they may have liked or followed between January 2015 and August 2017".

Facebook on Wednesday said it would let some of its users see whether they liked or followed pages belonging to Russia-linked operatives that sought to sow political divisiveness around the 2016 United States presidential election. But, as Recode notes, this tool is limited to showing you the accounts that you directly follow, not the ones that your friends do, so you're going to only get one piece of the pie.

As it is, users will have to see a story about the tool and opt to head to it and check what they had seen.

US lawmakers have criticized the tech firms for not doing more to detect the alleged election meddling, which the Russian government denies involvement in.

In addition to creating the bogus accounts, which were designed to spread misinformation and influence U.S. voters, Facebook said the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency spent $100,000 on over 3000 ads displayed around the time of the election.

As has now been well-document, the company did not imagine its platform could be used that way before the election.

It was not clear if Facebook would eventually do more, such as sending individualized notifications to users.

Facebook, along with rivals Google and Twitter, was grilled by lawmakers over the matter earlier this month during three congressional hearings on Capitol Hill.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat who had asked for notifications, said Facebook's plan "seems to be a serious response" to his request. Additional steps are required from these tech giants to improve transparency with respect to Russian abuse of their platforms.
