Among the new touches this year: On the outside, wreaths topped with red bows adorn every White House window. "And now, as the president of the United States, it's my tremendous honor to finally wish America and the world a very merry Christmas".

"Whatever our beliefs, we know that the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of this incredible life forever changed the course of human history", Mr. Trump told a crowd along the National Mall near the White House. The dancers echoed the first themed Christmas at the White House, Jacqueline Kennedy's "Nutcracker Suite" in 1961. The First Lady's Director of Communications Stephanie Grisham also sent out a tweet with the image of the hallway decorations that many are deeming eerie and spooky and better suited to Halloween than Christmas.

A Nativity scene has been on display since 1967, including during the term of President Obama.
