Facebook launches parent-controlled 'Messenger Kids' app

Facebook Surpasses 500 Million Monthly Users For Its Messenger App

Facebook has launched a preview of Messenger Kids, a new chat app that lets children communicate with friends and family in a safe environment with parental supervision. The app does collect the content of children's messages, photos they send, features they use, and what device they're using them on, apparently to make life better (for who?) with the app, i.e. improve the functionality of Messenger Kids.

Chief executive Javed Khan said today: "We have serious concerns about young children using Messenger Kids and would urge Facebook to work with child safety experts before introducing it in the United Kingdom to protect children from grooming or sharing inappropriate images".

Once parents download the Facebook app to their child's iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone, they will authenticate it with their Facebook account.

Facebook requires users to be 13 or older to have a profile on its social network and the app is the first targeted at children under that age.

As under the federal law, users under the age of 13 legally can not sign-in and open a Facebook account or use it.

This preview of Messenger Kids is only available in the USA at this time on the Apple App Store, and will be coming to Amazon App Store and Google Play Store in the coming months.

You won't be able to see what your kid is saying or what they're seeing from the management panel, which could be a deal breaker for parents of kids at the lower end of Messenger Kids' age range.

Global passenger traffic up 7.2pc in Oct: IATA
Latin America: Airlines in Latin America are forecast to generate a $900 million net profit in 2018, up from $700 million in 2017. Cargo revenues will continue to do well in 2018, reaching $59.2bn, up 8.6 per cent from expected 2017 revenues of $54.5bn.

It's important to understand that kids under 13 still can't sign up for a Facebook account. Instead, the app operates as an extension of the parent's account. Through the app, Facebook is attempting to steer young users toward a service that's actually designed for them.

The child would not be given their own Facebook account, which is prohibited for those under 13. On Snapchat, where ephemerality can cover evidence of inappropriate contact, or Musical.ly, where kids dance provocatively in front of huge audiences, dangers mount and parents are often clueless. There will be no ads in "Messenger Kids" and a child's information will not be taken to use in ads.

The Secretary of State for Health said he was not sure Messenger Kids, which is being rolled out in the U.S. before the United Kingdom, "is the right direction at all".

Messenger Kids is full of features for kids to connect with the people they love.

While some users were not sure whether they were the only ones affected, others hilariously tweeted that Messenger going down means the end is quite near.

Even though it has all those things, Facebook is still getting a lot of flack for it, but FB says don't worry about it!
