Never asked Sibal to get Ayodhya case postponed: Sunni Board

In a fresh twist to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, the Sunni Waqf Board on Wednesday disassociated itself from senior advocate Kapil Sibal's arguments in the Supreme Court, seeking postponement of hearing in the matter till the 2019 elections.

On Tuesday, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, Kapil Sibal requested the Supreme Court to set the next hearing on the case after March 2019. Senior party leader Anand Sharma said, "The Congress is clear that the matter is before the Supreme Court and our party will support whatever the court says".

The BJP is playing the role of "Manthara', raking up Kapil Sibal's stand on the hearing", Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, while addressing the media. "Though Kapil Sibal is our lawyer, I personally don't agree with him that the hearing be deferred beyond 2019".

Congress leader Anand Sharma said his party was not a litigant in the dispute, and would accept whatever decision the Supreme Court made.

He further asked the Prime Minister to "check his facts" before commenting on the issue.

Sibal told the three-Judge Bench of the Court that all the exhibits were not filed before this Court. A list showing which lawyer appeared for which side, part of the very same December 5 order sheet, showed that the prominent lawyer appeared for UP Sunni Waqf Board, whose civil appeal has been numbered "4192" of 2011. We want a solution to the issue at the earliest.

Rehmani also said that Sibal had talked about shifting of the hearing on the advice of the AIMPLB and other Muslim parties.

The stakeholders in the case had moved the apex court after the Allahabad HC directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site.

PM was quick to congratulate Mehboob and the Waqf Board for exposing the Congress design through Sibal even before the Board sought to clarify that Mehboob had no locus standi in the organisation.

"Why does he have to link a Ram mandir (temple) with the elections".
