According to the data, the IPC crimes have increased by 0.9 per cent (from 29,49,400 in 2015 to 29,75,711 in 2016) while SLL crimes increased by 5.4 per cent (from 17,61,276 in 2015 to 18,55,804 in 2016). It has registered 4816 rape cases.

The Mumbai Police had in 2016 registered 59,072 cases under the Indian Penal Code and the state laws.

In addition, among the 19 major cities, Delhi also reported 38.8 per cent of total IPC criminal cases, followed by Bengaluru at 8.9 per cent and Mumbai at 7.7 per cent. Delhi has the distinction of the highest crime rate of 182.1 as compared to the national average of 77.2. The pendency is 44%, while 52 cases saw convictions, putting the conviction rate at 24.4%.

According to the NCRB data, Delhi reported the highest number of murders - 479 of the total 2,194 cases - with a marginal increase of 3.2% from past year, followed by Bengaluru with 229 cases and Patna with 195 cases.

A new chapter on missing persons and children has been included to comply the Supreme Court directions along with a new table on cases related to Fake Indian Currency Notes, the NCRB report said. As for murder, Delhi registered 479 out of a total of 2,194 cases or 21.8 per cent followed by Bengaluru at 229 cases or 10.4 per cent and Patna at 195 cases or 8.9 per cent. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage. The rate for violent crime in Mumbai stands at 33.1 cases per lakh as against the average of 40.6 in the top metropolitan cities of the country. Mumbai came in second, with 5,128 cases reported.

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country.

Cyber crime has witnessed a rapid increase as the State registered 616 cases in 2016 when compared to 536 cases in 2015 and the NCRB report has put the AP in the sixth place in the list of States with highest cyber-crime cases.

Cases of cyber crime, rape, crime against woman, crime against children, kidnapping and abduction, crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs)/Scheduled Tribes (STs) showed an increasing trend while cases of murder, rioting, robbery and dacoity decreased in 2016, said the NCRB report. A total of 1,06,900 ammunition was seized during 2016. Under the head crime against women in metropolitan cities, as many as 1055 cases have been reported from Indore.
