A computer glitch in the computer system that allows American Airlines pilots to "bid" for time-off based on seniority failed to limit requests for the upcoming Christmas travel season, the union representing pilots tells CBS News.

The Allied Pilots Association, which represents employees for American Airlines, said on Wednesday that a scheduling error from the airline may affect more than 15,000 flights from December 17 to 31, according to Reuters.

But while headlines like the inevitable "Glitch that Stole Christmas" have given ticket-holders some agita, American said that it is working to resolve the problem, which would affect flights scheduled between December 17 and the end of the year.

"We are actively working to resolve this problem, and we should avoid cancellations during the holiday period", however, has assured the company, to the effect that she had "drivers reserve" to the end of the year and that it proposed to pay 150% more for each hour worked to attract potential candidates.

"That number of open flights continues to decrease thanks to our pilots who are stepping up to the plate", said Cody.

The Allied Pilots Association (APA) estimates roughly 15,000 American Airlines flights could be at risk of being canceled because they do not have a full crew.

A system error with American Airlines has resulted in the possible disruption of over 15,000 flights.

Shares of American Airlines Group Inc lost almost US$2 after news of the glitch, although they still closed up 3 cents at US$49.25.

"Out of the 200,000 flights American will operate in December, only a few hundred are now unassigned to pilots". But flights at Washington's Reagan National, Boston's Logan International, Miami International, New York's LaGuardia, Philadelphia International, Salt Lake City International and Charlotte Douglas International airports are also affected. "The contract is important, but the most important of this is ensuring our passengers are taken care of...but this is going to require a partnership to solve it, regardless of what the rules are."Miller said American's leadership spoke to the APA Wednesday afternoon to hammer out a resolution to the staffing shortage".

"The airline is a 24/7 op", said pilot's union spokesman, Dennis Tajer. The airline operates about 6,700 flights per day. Most of the flights affected were for travel between December 17 and December 31.
