UN Political Chief to Visit N. Korea

Feltman is now the United Nations undersecretary-general for political affairs.

US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said last week that while Washington does not seek war with Pyongyang, "if war comes, make no mistake, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed".

Once in the North, Feltman will discuss "issues of mutual interest and concern" with officials, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, adding he was unable to say whether Feltman will meet with the reclusive state's leader Kim Jong-Un.

The UN's political chief will visit North Korea this week for talks with officials, amid heightened tensions over the North's latest ballistic missile test.

Invited by North Korea to spend three days in Pyongyang, Feltman will engage in "policy dialogue" on a wide range of topics with senior DPRK officials.

The other four pacemen - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav - were automatic picks. Considering him over world's number 1 and 2 spinners (Ashwin and Jadeja) would have been a big ask.

He said Mr Feltman's trip was in response to an invitation extended by the North Koreans during the UN General Assembly in September. Feltman's predecessor, Lynn Pascoe, visited the North in 2010.

Analysts say it is unclear whether the missile survived re-entry into the earth's atmosphere or could successfully deliver a warhead to its target - key technological hurdles for Pyongyang.

In a separate message to staff, Cathay general manager Mark Hoey said the crew described seeing the missile "blow up and fall apart", The South China Morning Post reported.

The U.S. and South Korea started joint military drills Monday.

Trump announced on November 20 that the United States was returning North Korea to the list of state sponsors of terrorism and promised to intensify a campaign of "maximum pressure" and sanctions as part of a rolling effort to compel Kim's government to negotiate over its nuclear program. Last week's missile landed in Japan's economic waters.
